by Serenity Irlanda-Reilly, Duet’s Marketing Intern
My name is Serenity, and I’m a senior in high school interning at Duet. As I’ve spent more time at Duet, I’ve had the privilege to hear stories from volunteers working with Duet. One of those stories being Pamela’s.
“I knew I was going to be retiring in the future and wanted to put together some volunteer opportunities that I could work on after I retired.”
That was one of the first things Pamela told me, and it stuck with me right away. It wasn’t dramatic or complicated, but it felt real. She wasn’t just thinking about ending a chapter of her life; she was already thinking about what she could do next.
When I interviewed Pamela, it felt like listening to someone who didn’t want to slow down. Instead, she wanted to stay involved and make a difference. She told me that about a year and a half ago, she started looking into volunteer opportunities. Even though she couldn’t remember exactly how she first heard about Duet, something about it made her curious enough to learn more. So, she took a step and went to one of Duet’s volunteer orientations.
As she talked about it, I imagined what that moment must have been like not really knowing what to expect but hoping it could turn into something meaningful. And for Pamela, it did. That orientation helped her see that volunteering with Duet wasn’t just about providing services helping; it was about connecting with people and being there for them to help them age in place with dignity.
Listening to her, I realized this wasn’t just about filling time after retirement. Pamela was looking for a purpose. She wanted to do something that mattered, and through Duet, she found a way to fulfill that purpose and serve not just herself but others.

Her story also helped me understand what Duet really does: connect volunteers like Pamela with people who need support and companionship. For many Duet volunteers and the homebound neighbors, they serve; the relationship is more than a completed trip to the grocery store or doctor’s office – it’s the start of a new friendship. “We just clicked immediately,” Pamela shared about her neighbor. Those connections can make a big difference in someone’s life.
By the end of the interview, I kept thinking about how simple her story started. She didn’t have a perfect plan. She just knew she wanted to do something meaningful. And because she took that first step, it turned into something bigger with Duet.
Pamela’s experience shows that even small decisions can lead to something important. You don’t always have to know exactly what you’re doing; you just must be willing to try.
And sometimes, that’s how something meaningful begins, and with Duet you can do something meaningful for others.
